 Bread & Salt Welcoming Ceremony

Bread and Salt Ceremony is one of the oldest Russian traditions. When important, respected or admired guests arrive, they were greeted by young women in traditional costumes with a loaf of bread placed on a rushnik (embroidered towel). A salt holder or a salt cellar is placed on top of the bread loaf or secured in a hole on the top of the loaf.

The tradition originated as a folk custom in western Russia. As a sign of hospitality, when the emperor or empress visited their towns, merchants and gentry would present a loaf of bread placed on a round dish covered with an embroidered towel. The ceremony also was used prior to the marriage of a landowner when he traveled to each village on his estate, introducing his new bride to the peasants. The ceremony symbolized that the couple would never be without the necessities of life.

The tradition still is practiced, both in Russia (occasionally at weddings) and by descendants of Russians living in other countries (bread and salt is brought to a family member or friend when they move into a new home).

Man and woman, dressed in Russian national costumes serve Bread & Salt, while a folklore trio is playing and singing. The Ceremony is perfect in combination with the welcome reception during check – in (glass of champagne or a shot of Russian vodka). Ceremony duration is 20-30 min.

Entartainment during the dinner: Russian Folkloric Instrumental Ensemble

Russian traditional instrumental ensemble would be a great entertainment option as a background performance during welcome cocktail or dinner. Ensemble consists of 3-4 persons. The instruments are subject to change but the most popular set is balalaika, accordion, domra and bass-balalaika. The band will perform some of famous national Russian songs. Recommended duration of performance is 1 hour (a minimum fee). Extra charge will be applied (per hour) if performance is delayed for more than 30 minutes from originally confirmed time due to program change (with artists being ready in time). For performances on a ship, an extra charge (per hour) will be applied if the trip takes more than confirmed duration of artists performance. Technical equipment (lighting & sound), as well as a stage construction (if required) is not included into the price and depends on venue size, number of guests and seating style.

Russian Folkloric Instrumental Ensemble is recommended for Russian style events in combination with Russian Circus, Cossack performance and other traditional Russian acts. Advance reservation is recommended. Price to be reconfirmed upon request.

It is the best known of kremlins (Russian citadels) and includes four palaces, four cathedrals and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. The complex serves as the official residence of the President of Russia. Within the Kremlin there is a Cathedral Square, the so-called «City of God». Six buildings, including 3 three enormous cathedrals edge the square. Most of them, the work of Italian architects during the late 15th and early 16th Century. The Armory building built in 1851 as a factory for making weapons nowadays houses a museum, in which an enormous collection of Russian national treasures, including the famous Faberge eggs, carriages, cookware, jewelry, etc. is on display. The State Historical Museum is located outside the walls. Entry fee includes the visit to the Kremlin Territory and 3 cathedrals.

The Armoury Chamber, a treasure-house, is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace's complex. It is situated in the building constructed in 1851 by architect Konstantin Ton. The museum collections were based on the precious items that had been preserved for centuries in the tsars' treasury and the Patriarch's vestry. Some of the exhibits were made in the Kremlin's workshops, others were accepted as ambassadorial gifts. The museum was named after one of the oldest Kremlin's treasury stores.

The Armoury Chamber preserves ancient state regalia, ceremonial tsar's vestments and coronation dress, vestments of the Russian Orthodox Church's hierarchs, the largest collection of gold and silverware by Russian craftsmen, West European artistic silver, ceremonial weapons and arms, carriages, horse ceremonial harness.
