MOSCOW HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS TO BAN SMOKING

In the near future Moscow is to impose a ban on smoking in all local catering establishments, clubs, as well as in hotels, premises which belong to local authorities. This list, in particular, will include: hotels «National» and «Metropol», restaurant «Don Quixote» and «Lights of Moscow», the club Imperia Lounge, Cafe Mayak and other popular venues.  In the case of adoption of this law, these measures will take effect in 2012. The Russian capital has decided to take the path of European countries which are actively introducing a ban on smoking in their establishments. These measures have received a great resonance, for example, in Spain, where employees of the entertainment industry demanded from their local governments to abolish the law or at least mitigate its effects.

As for hotels in Moscow, there are not enough of them, so hardly a smoking ban will affect their occupancy, but the restaurants and cafes may have hard times. Many experts say that catering establishments where smoking will be prohibited will be able to win popularity among residents and visitors who prefer to lead a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to restaurants and hotels, smoking ban would also extend to health facilities, education, culture and sport, government agencies and staircases of residential buildings.

GAZPROM MAY BUILD OKHTA TOWER IN NORTHERN ST. PETERSBURG

A subsidiary of the Russian energy giant Gazprom has bought a plot of land in the northern part of St. Petersburg where it may build a 400-meter tall skyscraper.A spokeswoman for the Okhta Business Center company said the construction of the Okhta Business Center on a plot of 140,000 square meters in St. Petersburg's Primorsky District is yet to be approved.
Plans by Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom to build a complex of office buildings dominated by a needle-like skyscraper, derisively dubbed the Gazoscraper, prompted fierce public opposition. Critics feared that the tower, which was to go up next to the 18th century Smolny Cathedral, may ruin St. Petersburg's unique low-rise skyline.
The plan was abandoned following objections from UNESCO and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Gazprom, which reportedly invested about seven billion rubles ($245.5 million) into the project, earlier said the business center project should be changed as it was designed specifically for the location in the city center.»Naturally, the project needs to be changed. I have no idea of who will do it. Our design company received no orders, the existing contract concerns only the previous location,» the project's architect, Philipp Nikandrov, said.
«The tower itself may be built in another location, but its surroundings should be adjusted,» he added.

SKY EXPRESS CANCELS FUEL SURCHARGE

SKY EXPRESS CANCELS FUEL SURCHARGE

Discounter company SkyExpress has cancelled fuel surcharge on route Moscow — St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, this cancellation didn't led to depreciation of tickets. All the price is included into fare.

It is not clear, why fuel surcharges weren't cancelled on other company's routes: they look incredibly, because fuel surcharge in some cases is even more than fare itself. Unfortunately, advertising of fares without charges is not yet prohibited in Russia. However, such air carriers as Aeroflot, Russia and Siberia (S7 Airlines) have already cancelled so-called «fuel surcharge» on St. Petersburg route.

Location of the central figure is unique: center of St.Petersburg, right between the Petropavlovaskaya fortress and Strelka. Dvortsovaya embankment is well seen from here, and the site fits the very picturesque view. That is not the only unique feature of the project: territory of the future mixed-use complex is very large – 9,3ha. It is very large for center in a historical city, especially in Petersburg. And the moreover, the investors claim they are going to have finished the project by 2016. So the «embankment» is the largest «real» project in the city at that moment.
