Monument to Minin and Pozharsky will be moved for restoration in October 2021

The sculpture will be dismantled and installed on a temporary frame-type pedestal, said Alexey Zhdanov, chief architect of the restoration project

The monument to Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky will be moved for restoration from the pedestal to the pavilion near the Intercession Cathedral on Red Square in October 2021. This was announced by the chief architect of the restoration project Alexei Zhdanov at a briefing on Wednesday.

"Dismantling of the sculpture will be carried out in accordance with the work schedule after the completion of the pavilion. This will happen around October," he said, adding that the sculptural composition weighs about 18 tons. He noted that the restoration council decided not to transport the monument, but to carry out work on the spot.

"The sculpture will be dismantled, installed on a temporary frame-type pedestal, thanks to which the main emergency work will be carried out to strengthen the sculpture's frame. It is in disrepair due to corrosion of the embedded elements," the architect explained. According to him, the restorers will dismantle the damaged metal elements of the frame, as well as remove the molding mass from the figures of the sculptural composition.

"After the completion of these works, the sculptural composition will be returned back to the pedestal," he added. The restoration of the monument is organized by the State Historical Museum. The works will be performed by the Interregional Scientific and Restoration Art Directorate (MNRHU), which won the competition held by the museum. The cost of restoration work is 55 million rubles.

At the end of August 2018, the Historical Museum opened a fundraising campaign for the restoration of the monument to Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. The monument was erected 200 years ago with folk funds, so collecting donations for its restoration has also become an opportunity for anyone who wants to become involved in the preservation of the monument.

Hundreds of Russian citizens, as well as citizens of the CIS countries, became donors. The largest donations were made by the Russian Military Historical Society and Promsvyazbank. The rest of the funds required for the restoration of the monument were allocated by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
