Elaginoostrovsky palace-museum is open to the first visitors

For decades, the Elagin Palace served as an adornment of the local park of culture and recreation, although it lacked a high-quality restoration to fully comply with the museum status. It is now almost complete
The architectural dominant of the Elagin Island, one of the most famous monuments of the High Classicism era, the Elagin Palace for the first time after almost 20 years of repair and restoration work returns to museum life.
The palace was erected in 1818-1824 by Karl Rossi at the behest of Emperor Alexander I as the summer residence of the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. Outstanding craftsmen of that time were engaged in construction and interior design. And today the interiors of the Elagin Palace are considered one of the best examples of the Empire style in Russia.
After the revolution, from 1918 to 1929, the Museum of History and Life worked here, then it was closed, and the entire Elagin Island was turned into a park of culture and recreation. During the Great Patriotic War, the interiors were badly damaged in a fire. Their restoration lasted from 1952 to 1961, but only a few rooms became public - the rest housed a recreation center for workers. In 1987, the palace was given the status of a museum, and the formation of the collection began. In 1990, Elagin Island was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List; since 2001, the architectural and park ensemble has been a monument of federal significance.
In fact, repair and restoration work has been carried out here since the early 2000s. Back in 2006-2012, the facades were completely restored, the roof was repaired, and the access ramp was replaced. From 2016 to 2021, the palace underwent comprehensive repair and restoration work on the second and third floors, overhaul of engineering networks. But the most complex and important work was carried out in the palace interiors, many of which have been restored anew for the first time in almost 80 years. For example, on the third floor in the premises of the church in the name of St. Nicholas, when clearing the plafonds, the decor of 16 semi-columns made of artificial marble was recreated according to the historical description.
The interiors of the ceremonial halls, Chambers-Jungfer and Dressing rooms, and the Crimson drawing-room have been partially restored. The painting and decoration of two vestibules, especially damaged by the soot of the boiler room located in the basement after the war, as well as marble fireplaces and floors, have been completely restored. A silk damask created during the post-war restoration was carefully preserved in the bedchamber. Artificial marble was cleared in all the halls, the molding of cornices and friezes was restored, and the gilded elements of ornaments were renewed. In total, 283.9 million rubles from the budget were spent on design and restoration work. According to Tatyana Ershova, deputy director for museum activities, the local pride has always been the doors, the decor of which did not repeat itself, and the decoration was so refined and perfect that the Elagin Palace was even called the “palace of doors”. “Modern cabinetmakers have demonstrated deep understanding and high skill in door restoration,” says Tatiana Ershova. "Now we see them updated, in all their glory."
The main achievement of modern restoration, according to the museum staff, was the return of the interior of the study of Alexander I. After the war, it was partially restored, but due to roof leaks it was never opened to the public. In addition to the painting, a fireplace, a fireplace mirror, a hand-printed damask, which upholstered the walls, and ornamental decoration of windows are now recreated in the study. Visitors will see this room for the first time. For the first time, they will be able to see the only work in our country by the Danish sculptor Jens Adolf Erihau, a student of the famous Bertel Thorvaldsen, "The hunter kidnapping a panther cub", installed in the Crimson drawing room. The former living quarters of the second floor have been converted into exhibition halls, and the exhibition "Cabinet Stories" has already opened here, dedicated to the development of furniture art in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2022, the Elaginoostrovsky Palace will be 200 years old. A number of palace premises are promised to be restored by the anniversary.
