The New Kremlin Museum – part of renewed Armory Chamber, opens in central Moscow

The new museum – part of the Moscow Kremlin museum ensemble, moves Armory Chamber collection from Kremlin territory to the building of Middle Shopping Arcade located between The Red Square and Zariadie park. The project of the museum displacement operates under the direction of architectural bureau Meganom and Nowadays. The collaborative project by these bureaus transforms the building of Middle Shopping Arcarde to make it more suitable for placed collections.

Accordingly to the project, the new museum contains two-part – historical and modern. Historical part located in the reconstructed historical building of Middle Shopping Arcarde, other part – in absolutely new building closed from the streets by original facade of XIX century. All exhibition spaces connected with each other by glass bridges, allowed to visitors moving freely between halls.

The historical part also includes offices for staff and an educational center for children. There are café, restaurants, and halls for events with a view to the Red Square.

The collection of the New Kremlin Museum is the most of the Armory exhibits, which moved from the Kremlin walls, leaving only the Tsar’s regalia and carriages in the old building. 3,500 items are being moved to the restored building of the Middle Trading Rows near GUM: Byzantine antiquities, Russian art of the 12th - 17th centuries, Porcelain, Silver, Ambassadors' gifts, Modern jewelry art, etc. - which will be located in 500 showcases.

The building works will end in 2021, moving collections and interior outfitting will take 1 year. The museum will be opened for visitors in 2023. The new museum will allow seeing almost all collection of Armory Chamber, at the same time in the nowadays Kremlin Museum there is the possibility to see just 30% of all collection.

Middle Trading Arcade building story starts from the XVI century royal decree publishing obligated sellers to build stone arcades in the district where had been extensive trade from the XIV century. Three-quarters of stalls were formed into arcades at that time: Upper, Middle and Lower. After the fire of 1812 Upper and Middle trading rows have been rebuilding by architect O.Bove for 4 years.

Buildings are dilapidated, and the architectural appearance of the Red Square changed after the construction of the Historical Museum building at the end of the XIX century. The idea of the renovation of the Arcades has aroused. At first , the Upper Arcade was remodeled by architect A. Pomerantcev in 1888-93, then the Middle Arcade was reconstructed by architect R. Klein in 1893.

After 1917 the Middle Arcade building housed the second house the Revolutionary Military Council. Prior to 2000, the complex was managed by the Ministry of Defense. Large-scale architectural projects for the demolition of all the Arcades were developed since the beginning in the 1930s. The Lower Arcade was demolished in the 1960s. Middle Arcade is  now rebuilt, all four inner buildings were demolished and the central part was partially redesigned.

In 2000, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Federal Complex" Kremlin ", the subordinate of the President administration, acted as the main customer of reconstruction of the Middle Trading Arcade. Hotel complex was supposed to be built on its basis. Terms of Delivery repeatedly postponed. In June 2012, Russian President proposed to transfer the Middle Shopping Arcade to "Moscow Kremlin" museum.
