The longest Olympic torch relay in Olympic Winter Games history started 29th of September.

The torch relay will start in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. The torch is expected to be lit using the sun’s rays, reflected on a large parabolic mirror which is used to symbolize the approval of the gods to host the Olympic Games. Russian ice hockey player Alexander Ovechkin will be the first Russian to carry the Olympic flame.

Over 123 days, an in the hands of 14,000 torch-bearers, the Olympic torch will make a journey of over 65 000 km (40,300 miles) by car, train, airplane, Russian troika and reindeer-pulled sleigh. By comparison, the Olympic flame traveled 45 00 km (27,900 miles) before Vancouver 2010 and  41 100 (25,600 miles) before Turin 2006. The journey will take four months, Olympic flame will visit all 83 regions of the Russian Federation and will end on February 7, 2014, at the Olympic Stadium in Sochi.
